Annual Drive Thru Flu Shot Clinic Scheduled for October 8

Flint Hills Community Health Center is hosting its annual drive-thru flu shot clinic from 7:30 am - 4 pm at the health center, 420 W. 15th Ave, Emporia. Residents can drive up under the canopy on the west side of the building to begin the process. Anyone ages six months and older can get vaccinated. No appointment is needed.

“It is important to get your flu vaccination every year,” said Renee Hively, Flint Hills Community Health Center CEO. “It is especially important this year as last year flu was practically non-existent because of the mitigating factors people were using against COVID-19 also worked against influenza. This year, people aren’t socially distancing or masking up as much, so we expect to see more flu than last year.”

According to the CDC, the 2020-2021 flu season saw historically low levels of flu activity. While it is a positive that there was less sickness, this means the population missed the opportunity to establish or boost their immunity to influenza for future flu seasons.

The flu shot is the most effective way to prevent influenza. While no vaccine is100% effective, those who receive the flu shot are much less likely to need treatment for severe symptoms and have a faster recovery time if they do become infected.

The flu shot is free with most insurance providers. For those who are uninsured, the flu shot is $30, that can be paid by cash or check.
