Community Health at CareArc Urges Action to Prevent Measles Spread

April 23, 2025

CareArc’s Community Health staff is calling on all community members to take proactive steps in preventing the spread of measles, a highly contagious but preventable disease.

Measles can lead to serious health complications, especially in children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. With recent outbreaks reported in several regions, it is crucial to stay informed and protected.

Key Preventive Measures:

• Vaccination is the best protection. The MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is safe, effective, and typically administered in two doses, starting at 12-15 months of age and again at 4-6 years.

• Check your immunization status. Adults who are unsure about their vaccination history should consult their healthcare provider.

• Stay alert to symptoms. Measles symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red/watery eyes, and a red rash that usually starts on the face and spreads. If you or a family member experience these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately and avoid public spaces.

Why It Matters:

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases — it can live in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area. One infected person can spread it to up to 90% of unvaccinated people close to them.

According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), a measles outbreak has been confirmed in Western Kansas, prompting increased public health awareness across the state. There have been 37 cases affecting 8 counties. As of April 23, 2025, all reported cases remain confined to western Kansas, with no confirmed cases in Emporia or East Central Kansas.

While there is currently no immediate threat to the Emporia area, Community Health officials emphasize that measles is highly contagious and can spread quickly if it enters new communities. “We have the tools to stop measles in its tracks — vaccination, education, and community awareness,” said Khora Burright, RN at CareArc Community Health. “Protecting ourselves means protecting the most vulnerable in our community, including infants and those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons.”

CareArc encourages all families to review their immunization records, and if not up to date, to contact your provider or you can walk-in to CareArc’s Community Health clinic, 420 W. 15th Avenue, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM to get vaccinated.
